We are very excited with the news that Saints Row 4 is coming out August of this year. Since the recent announcement trailer was released, very slowly Deep Silver have been drip feeding us screenshots and information about the Saint’s fourth outing.

Saints Row has changed and  although some will be pleased by the series new direction, other ware bound to be disappointed. Saints Row has evolved a long way from it’s original Grand Theft Auto clone form. The ‘Hip Hop’ Gangster influences have been dialled right down and Saints Row has created and carved out it’s own niche in the open world gaming market. Saints Row pushes the boundaries of crazy and wacky gameplay. Do you ever play an open world game and think to yourself; ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if I could do that?
Of course you do! Saints Row is fully aware of this and that’s why progressively each Saints Row game has turned up the crazy factor with everything from fighting a bunch of mascot pandas to being able to control a giant ball of yarn as you tear up an entire city King Kong style. The future looks set to take the craziness up another notch and now what do we have? ALIENS! (No, not that awful game that Gearbox want to forget about!)

This screenshot gives us a glimpse of the playable areas design. The game has taken a turn into being a science fiction styled, alien dystopia of a world. The vast skyscrapers are still all around but towering above them now are the floating alien structures. The end of Saints Row 3 sees you battling an airship fortress that that the crafts in this image are not dissimilar to, however from the press release it is clear that these objects have invaded the skyline because of the new alien invasion threat. The ‘Saint’ is in this image is dressed in a neo-cyberpunk styled attire and from his positioning of towering over much of the landscape here, I wonder if it is possible to somehow fly or glide across areas of the map? Similar to what we may have seen at one point during the announcement trailer?

Well, well, well… This guy seems to be actually flying! This shot is one of the first that gives us a clear shot of what adversaries we should expect to be facing. The aliens crouched behind the low railing with their laser guns look as though they are the standard grunts but the eagle eyed of you will notice that there are also hovering enemies on small hover bikes above them. The middle distance sees a much larger enemy and hints to a mini boss style of enemy. (think the large brute experiments from Saints Row 3) Finally this image shows an aircraft hovering a short distance from the ‘Saint’, but this looks different to the alien craft and could possibly be friendly. It’s a fair bet that we can expect to pilot one of these craft at some point.

This shot shows us the clear use of some of the new abilities available in the game. The superpowers should make for complete chaos and of course, a lot of fun! The ability to freeze enemies in the same fashion as in this image should make for some fascinating set pieces if you can then smash them apart afterwards! The possibilities for super powers and their uses are limitless in the world of the Saints!

An excerpt from the press release for Saints Row 3 makes for a very interesting insight into what to expect from the game:

Volition continues the story of the Third Street Saints by elevating their status to the highest level – the leaders of the free world.  In Saints Row IV, the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States. Now the larger-than-life insanity of the Saints series gets a new twist with a catastrophic alien invasion, and the aliens have transported the Saints to a bizarro-Steelport simulation. Wield gargantuan superpowers and fight to free humanity from alien leader Zinyak’s mental grasp. Escape the simulation that’s trapped the Saints crew, or die trying.

Saints Row IV lets players delve into an arsenal of alien weaponry and technology that will turn each Saint into an ultimate entity of destruction. Utilize out-of-this-world superpowers to fight all the way to the top. With intensified action and enhanced customization, players can use their newfound superpowers and leap over buildings, outrun the fastest sports cars, or send enemies flying with telekinesis in the greatest, most insane instalment of Saints Row yet.
